Sunshine… Sun damage!
All of you know to put sunscreen on your children to avoid them burning on those beach / garden days, but why do we forget about their eyes? We are used to seeing occasional burnt red shoulders but just because we don’t see the damage to the eyes, why don’t we protect them too?
The level of awareness is just not the same with respect to eyes and damage caused by excessive sun exposure which becomes a risk factor for the development of some eye diseases in later life. Let’s start the change we need to ‘see’ now and protect our little ones eyes from an early age. It’s never too late to start!!
The eye has a natural system to protect itself from UV however, this protection is not fully effective in children because their eyes are not fully developed, so they are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of sun. One of the reasons for this is that children’s eyes are more sensitive due to their pupils being larger than that of adults and therefore absorb more light.
Overexposure to sunlight on the eyes can cause short-term consequences, such as conjunctivitis and ocular keratitis, (sunburn of the cornea). This can be seen in the form of tearing, red eye, itching or pain, but also causes serious long term eye diseases such as cataracts, changes in the conjunctiva, macular degeneration, glaucoma, cornea and sclera and lesions in the retina.
Avoid direct sunlight and exposure at times when radiation is higher (between 12 and 16 hours) and make them wear sunscreen, caps, visors and sunglasses with proper UVA filters.
